great product to differentiate gemstones. you should have some basic knowledge to use this tester. The item arrive with the box a bit dented and the item did not work correctly. So Far, So Good
Gotta say...we purchased the Presidium tester and it came non calibrated and worked for about 3 days. We are now returning it. The Smartpro arrived today which we were able to test and it worked out of the box! You can see by the photo to that there is a major difference in quality and size. It also has a fantastic little manual for which the other unit does not. So, we will test with it for awhile and give it a go. I will update this review if we end up having to return it as well.

You need to know your gemstones first to use this machine.
I like this machine a lot, I use it all the time. But it's not for the novice. You need to have a good gemstone knowledge before using this. It doesn't tell you the exact gemstones and very little gemstones are listed. But if you know the hardness of the gemstones or use a gemstone book. You can definitely tell the difference of the gemstones. It can tell you the difference of Blue Topaz and Aquamarine. The difference of Rhodolite garnet Pink tourmaline and Pink Spinel. Just because I know the hardness. Just like any tools you need to know what you're doing with it.

It was used and not calibrated!
My husband ordered this gem tester as a gift for me. It was extremely used and the needle was going crazy on the screen as if it was not calibrated. It had hundreds of scratches on the face of the tester. I tried several gems and it was inaccurate. I sent it back the next day. He or I neither one could see anything about purchasing a used product on the description. It was packaged as a new item but inside was a different story. I have not yet received a refund.

Decent machine
I had a different model than this one two of them actually. They didn’t work worth a damn. This one you can at least calibrate yourself. And it’s very easy. Other machine you couldn’t calibrated couldn’t do anything. So you really couldn’t trust it. You have to watch your calibration closely though it varies from each time that you turn it on. It’s a little bit of a pain but it’s better than the other other one I had. That one you could not calibrate it all. So I’m pretty happy with this machine

Excellent for price - temperature sensitive
I read the reviews before purchasing, and decided it was still worth a try.Read the directions, all of them! Be sure to calibrate, use clean dry stones, and most importantly watch temperatures. At first the readings were wonky for the same gem. Back to the instructions…temperature! The house is cold, the stones even colder. I washed and throughly dried my hands and used them to warm gems one at a time. Spot on for every gem! I waited about a minute in between each gem.My recommendation is to pay attention to temperature, and pace for accuracy. (operator errors)I hope this review helps with your decision to buy this product.
