Does this device give more accurate readings than a smartphone noise meter app?

For those who don’t want to spend the money on one, reviewers have said the phone app is not as accurate, but, will still get the job done. I prefer accuracy, but, you have to choose what you want!

It should be able to measure the ceiling thumps accurately. Mine seems to work pretty well when dealing with not just db, but dBA too. So, with varying frequencies, they may appear to be louder then they really are, but with the different weights (A or C weighted), it seems to work fine.

Does this have automatic shutoff to preserve battery life?

Yes, the decibel meter will auto shut off to preserve battery life.
