Fast delivery
As much as this book hurt me because of how much I somehow related to it, I didn't profoundly enjoy it as much as I expected. Yet it opened my eyes, made me look deeper, and left me reflecting on the painful truths at the heart of the story.

A better translation!
I read this for my book club: this excellent translation is sending me back to all of the Russian greats, as long as they're translated by these two!

Finally, a main character who's just as petty, bitter, and overthinky as I am!
Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground is like reading the diary of your weirdest, most self-loathing friend who definitely shouldn’t be left alone with a bottle of vodka or a philosophy degree. The Underground Man spends 100+ pages explaining why he didn’t want to go to your party, didn’t want to enjoy it anyway, and how his non-attendance proves he’s better than all of you. He’s toxic, neurotic, and somehow convinced that suffering makes him sexy. Spoiler: it doesn’t. But it does make for a hilariously miserable philosophical spiral that’s both brilliant and absurd. Would not date. Would absolutely read again.
